Fluoroscopy is an imaging exam that uses x-rays to examine a specific part of the body. It differs from a conventional x-ray in that the images are obtained using a special image receptor that creates a “moving picture” of the body part being examined in real time, rather that just a still image. The upper gastrointestinal (GI) series uses XRays to diagnose problems in the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (first part of the small intestine). It may also be used to examine the small intestine. LUMBAR PUNCTURE

How to prepare for exam:

• No Preparation

Note: this exam will require an IV injection of contrast

Scheduling Considerations:

Anytime


UPPER GASTROINTESTINAL

How to prepare for exam:

• Nothing to eat or drink after midnight (or 8 hours prior to exam)

Required medications ARE permitted

Note: this exam will require you to drink an oral barium contrast

Scheduling Considerations:

Early morning appointment


LOWER GASTROINTESTINAL

How to prepare for exam:

• Nothing to eat or drink after midnight (or 8 hours prior to exam)

• Overnight colon cleanse required - available at local pharmacy

• Required medications ARE permitted

Note: this exam will require a barium contrast enema

Early morning appointment
